East Lake Golf Club: A Historic Jewel of Atlanta

East Lake Golf Club, nestled in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, is more than just a golf course; it's a storied institution that has played a significant role in the city's history and the development of the game of golf.

Early Beginnings:

The club's roots trace back to the late 19th century when Atlanta was experiencing rapid growth. In 1892, a group of prominent businessmen formed the East Lake Country Club, establishing a nine-hole course on land adjacent to East Lake Park. The initial layout was designed by renowned architect Walter J. Travis, known for his innovative course design principles.

Bobby Jones and the Golden Age:

The club's most celebrated era came in the early 20th century, thanks to the legendary Bobby Jones. Jones, a native of Atlanta, joined East Lake as a young boy and quickly became a prominent figure in the club's community. His exceptional golfing talent led him to win numerous amateur championships, including the U.S. Open and the British Open multiple times.

In 1926, Jones and his associates purchased East Lake Country Club, renaming it East Lake Golf Club. Under Jones's leadership, the club underwent significant renovations, including the expansion of the course to 18 holes and the construction of a clubhouse. Jones's association with East Lake solidified the club's reputation as a premier golfing destination.

A Legacy of Excellence:

Since Jones's time, East Lake Golf Club has continued to maintain its high standards. The course has been redesigned and updated over the years to meet modern standards while preserving its historic character. Today, East Lake is renowned for its challenging layout, pristine conditions, and rich history.

In addition to its golfing heritage, East Lake Golf Club has played a vital role in the Atlanta community. The club has hosted numerous charitable events and has been a supporter of various local causes.

East Lake Golf Club stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Bobby Jones and the enduring appeal of the game of golf. Its storied past and commitment to excellence make it a truly special place for golfers and history enthusiasts alike.

The TOUR Championship:

East Lake Golf Club has been the permanent home of the TOUR Championship since 2005. The tournament was first played at East Lake in 1998 and has been held at East Lake 23 times since then. The TOUR Championship is the culminating event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedEx Cup, with the top 30 players on the points list qualifying each year.
