Team USA Golf Eyes Double Gold at Paris Olympics
The United States Olympic golf team is primed for a repeat performance at the 2024 Paris Games, boasting a lineup stacked with talent and experience. Both the men's and women's teams are strong contenders for gold, with a mix of proven champions and rising stars.
The men’s golf competition is scheduled for Aug. 1-4 and the women’s is Aug. 7 -10. A total of 120 golfers have qualified for the event, with 60 women from 33 countries and 60 men from 32 countries. They will play at Le Golf National, the 2018 Ryder Cup venue and home of the DP World Tour’s Open de France since 1991.
Qualification for the Olympic golf team is based on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). The top 15 players on the OGWR are eligible for the Olympic Games, up to a maximum of four golfers from a single country. After the top 15, the Olympic Golf Rankings consist of up to the top two eligible players per country.
Leading the charge on the men's side is World No. 1 and 2024 Masters Champion, Scottie Scheffler. He's joined by the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Xander Schauffele who is fresh off his 2024 British Open victory and recent PGA Championship win. Rounding out the team is two-time major champion Collin Morikawa and 2023 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark.
While the United States boasts a powerful team aiming for Olympic gold in Paris, a captivating individual matchup is brewing within the team: Scottie Scheffler vs. Xander Schauffele.
The two Americans offer contrasting styles. Scheffler, with his powerful drives and relentless pursuit of birdies, embodies an aggressive approach. Schauffele, on the other hand, plays a more calculated game, prioritizing accuracy and minimizing mistakes.
While both golfers will be aiming to contribute to the team's overall success, the individual competition between them adds another layer of intrigue to the Olympic tournament. Their familiarity with each other's games, honed through years of competing on the PGA Tour, promises to be an exciting match on the course at Le Golf National.
On the women’s side, Nelly Korda, the current World No. 1 and reigning Olympic champion, anchors the team. Korda is enjoying a record-setting 2024 season and looks poised to defend her gold medal. Joining her are Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang, two rising stars who have been steadily climbing the professional ranks. This threesome brings a combination of power, finesse, and youthful enthusiasm to the course.
